We have structured this book to include the skills necessary to succeed…

…at Model UN while keeping an eye on the SOCIAL INTELLIGENCE of the strongest leaders in politics as well as business. Social Intelligence can be learned and it is our goal to make that your specialty.

We’ll give you a rundown of all of the chapter of the book because we want you to know what you’re investing in. If you’d like to buy a copy, click on any of the chapters below!

CHAPTER 1: Mantra of MUN

The first chapter is a quick description of the logistical goals of Model UN; it is entitled the “Mantra.” Most of you know these details already but for the noobs, aka “the newbies,” the United Nations is an organization built upon an IDEAL (and a “mantra” is a repeated phrase that is to aid in meditation). In reality, the ultimate goals of the United Nations require profound belief and consistent focus upon the ideals of peace, welfare, and stability. No matter how you approach your role as a delegate, those core values must radiate from your presence and oration (even when you act evil). Just remember your mantra, your goal. Then hurry on to the next chapter to start chomping on the real meat of the most powerful MUN delegates.

CHAPTER 2: Attitude of Winning

This chapter begins your descent into the depths of social intelligence and the core qualities used to build a magnetic and effective character. Charisma, confidence, and their effects on personal interactions are demonstrated in this section. We also point out another crucial piece that ties these character traits into a true, effective leader: the goal-oriented mindset. No matter how ambitious you are, if you have no goals you have no path to success. If you’re going to read further and you are really going to dedicate yourself to becoming an effective leader, you need to practice every day. Simple habits can make the difference. For example, you can get a small journal and start writing some goals for yourself. Start simple. Write a few changes that you hope this book will help you achieve.

CHAPTER 3: Teflon Smooth

“Teflon Smooth” is a metaphor for the really slick people that seem to always slip right below the radar. In other words, it refers to the delegates with Superior Social Intelligence. It sounds sneaky (and there’s some truth to that observation) but it more closely resembles a set of traits that make someone “cool.” Yes, there are traits; well-defined traits actually. This chapter defines the basic skills that you need to develop including body language, vocal techniques, and rapport. Your ability to master these three techniques and gauge your audience will catapult your effectiveness as a delegate. I can’t stress this chapter enough.

CHAPTER 4: The Cast of Characters

Now that we’ve outlined the type of personality that you need to create for yourself, we’re going to show you the types of personalities that you’re going to encounter on your little adventure into the MUNiverse. The compendium included in this chapter provides brief character sketches of various delegates. Use this section as an opportunity to learn about your enemy. Remember the teachings of Master Sun Tzu, “Know your enemy and know yourself and you can fight a hundred battles without disaster.”

CHAPTER 5: Rhetoric and Dialectic

Chapter 5 is a “How-To” for demonstrating superior powers of debate. It will carefully explain exactly how to take all of your newly improved social skills and apply them to the academic debates and negotiations that occupy the delegates of every MUN conference in existence. A quick explanation of the theory is followed by real-world examples. In the last section of the chapter, you practice.

CHAPTER 6: The Blueprint

The capping stone of chapters 3 thru 6 is this ultimate strategy guide for individual and double delegations. This is the foundation of techniques that will help you develop the ability to “mastermind.” There are also four strategies for your school if you’re blessed with a very large MUN club. Put your multiple delegations to work for you and maximize the effectiveness of Luxembourg, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, and Djibouti. Meaningless countries can become global voices in the affairs of the General Assemblies. We’ll show you how to happily dismantle your enemies with sheer numbers and tactics. In the 1970’s and 80’s, our high school club was known to employ these types of strategies and win multiple “best large delegation” awards each year.

CHAPTER 7: Dressed for Success

Dress codes should not require very much detail. Although it might be better included as an appendix, we’ve included this as a chapter because it seems lost to some of the shameful characters that can sometimes be noticed at large conferences. This is the deal: you’re technically post-adolescent. You should be able to dress yourself. You should be clean, odorless, and hygienic. You should be aware of your appearance. Unfortunately, some of these rules of conduct and appearance aren’t as obvious to everyone as we’d love to think. Thus, we have the typical chapter on standard professional dress and hygiene policy.

CHAPTER 8: Expository Writing

Despite the fact that position papers can strongly influence a chair’s opinion about you, your writing will only develop through practice. This chapter will give you a great deal of information about HOW writing is used in Model UN. The problem is that you need to do a lot of practice to get good at it. You need to start READING MORE BOOKS. Through reading and writing, you’ll figure out how to write better. We’re not going to fool you into believing that it’s easy enough to learn in a single chapter of any book. This chapter will describe the types of habits that will help you write convincing arguments. You’ll also learn the expected format for position papers, working papers, and resolutions. Again, we understand your nervousness when it comes to authoring these “papers,” but trust us – your fears are misplaced …unless you don’t know how to read and write. In that case, there’s not much anyone will be able to do for you, and we’re not sure what you’re doing with this book.

CHAPTER 9: The Art of Crisis

When delegates are ready to move beyond the comfort of large numbers and onto the echelon of elite decision makers, they enter the realm of Crisis. Crisis committees are whirlwinds of intensity and turmoil. The best delegates are deafening personalities. Every crisis is an adventure, the likes of which include plotlines influenced by spies, strategists, and turncoats. Policy sometimes takes a backseat to effectiveness and you must stand out or you’ll get chewed up and spit out. We’ve watched it happen. It is extremely important for you to change your perspective when you move from large delegations to smaller crisis committees. This might be the only chapter of any book you’ll ever read about crisis committees and we know it will blow your mind. You’ll also understand why The Dark Arts follow…

CHAPTER 10: The Dark Arts

This chapter is a dark, circuitous path down the rabbit hole of social graces and ‘business’ acumen. Getting things done is not always so easy. Sometimes you have to shout louder than the next guy in order to be heard. Sometimes you have to step on someone’s toes in order to get ahead in the crowd. This isn’t a chapter about causing harm to anyone. Instead, this is a short recipe list of ways to get you ahead. The Dark Arts acknowledges that all is fair in love and war. Even in the MUNiverse negotiations can become a war for ‘territory.’ Regardless of how much territory you’re willing to compromise, you must teach your opponents respect. If you truly want to be at the top of the mountain, it’s easy to see that there’s much less room at the top than there is at the bottom. It can be a treacherous path up that mountain… This chapter might even show you some shortcuts to avoid social hypothermia and political death.

THE APPENDICES – Parliamentary Procedure and Research

Yes, we KNOW that most of you are concerned about writing position papers and resolutions. You probably also think that you suck at research too. Luckily we include HOW-TO guides to aid you in your struggle, but we’re not going to overdo it here. These things are very, very systematic.

Parliamentary Procedure is a rulebook. You aren’t allowed to change those rules. You must learn them, but you can also keep a list of those rules with you. Our first appendix contains these rules. We strongly encourage you to become familiar with them. You’ll never know when you might need them. Research is the subject of Appendix B. You should research efficiently and effectively. Research is probably the most important part of choosing a valid position when writing a position paper. A valid position is the best thesis for any position paper. When you learn the arts of Rhetoric and Dialectic from Chapter 6, you’ll learn how to carve a deep stance and fortify your opinions with validity.
